ROUGH WATER POLO

SENIOR INTER-CLUB CONTEST Roughness was introduced into the water polo match played between the Ponsonby A and Mount Eden senior teams at the Mount Eden Club's carnival. The, rugged character of the play, the vigorous, spoiling tactics and the grim tackling, if not always legal, appealed to the spectators and raised them to a high pitch of excitement. Ponsonby advanced to leading position for the championship by means of a win by three goals to one. Barry again did sterling work for Ponsonby, controlling tho ball well and scoring two goals. Solid games were also played by Paper and Stotter. Tho most reliable Mount Eden players were Conies and Moore. The referee, Mr. W. J. Stevens, gave his decisions firmly. A competent official, ho instantly detects any infringements, and Aucklanders who have attended Now Zealand tournaments, either as players or spectators, regard him as a referee comparable with the best in tho Dominion.
