HOUSING SURVEY

MOUNT ALBERT AREA

BOUNDARIES FIXED \ SOME OBJECTIONS RAISED ! j Doubts regarding the necessity for a housing survey in ilio Mount Albert borough and dissatisfaction with the amount of extra work such a survey would mean to borough councils were expressed by several members of the Mount Albert Borough Council last night. Correspondency was received from the Government stating that the borough was required to furnish by January 15 a map showing a defined area within the borough if the council desired to carry out only a portion of a district survey.

The Mayor, Mr. H. A. Anderson, said the borough was hardly in need of a survey of tho whole of its area, as the greater part of it had been built in comparatively recent years. Mr. F. K. Martin pointed out that the council, much less smaller local bodies, was not adequately stalled for the immense amount of work that a survey would involve.

Mr. Anderson said he agreed that it might not be possible to complete the information desired by July 31 ,in tho normal course of routine, especially if occupiers of houses wero slow in furnishing details. After being told that items such as /employment of the occupier, reason for living in the district, sex and ap:e were among the details required, Mr. B. Brigham objected that some of this information was of a type required bv the recent census, when all details were strictly confidential. Ho said he did not altogether approve of the housing scheme's survey requirements if they were not kept confidential

/ It was decided to restrict the area to be surveyed to that portion of the district bounded by a line running; from the city boundary through "Western Springs lload to Argyle Street, down Macdonald Street to Sandringham and Edendale Road and along the Mount Eden boundary to Kingsland. This, it was stated, would take in all the old portions of the borough.
