APREST ON WEDDING EVE
How a man's arrest a day before his "marriage" prevented him from committing bigamy was described at AVnlthiim Abbey, Kssex, when .John Brennari Hoi ton, aged of South Chingford, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labour on two charges of theft. Hoi ton, it was stated, left his wife four weeks ago and went to Brighton. The banns for his "marriage" at Brighton had been published, and the ceremony was due to take place the day after his arrest. Hoi ton, who came from a good family, his father being a doctor practising at Klland, Yorkshire, had, it was stated, lost his mother at 15, and, upset by the shock, be embarked on a life of crime, lie had made an effort to go straight, had served in the Auxiliary Air Force, and had voluntarily given 20 blood transfusions. Holton pleaded guilty to stealing £1 •'! belonging to Frank Kales Back, of Chingford, by means of a trick, and to obtaining £'S 10s from the Cyclists' Touring Club by false pretences.
