ST. GEORGE SOCIETY

CHRISTMAS DANCE HELD Red and white, the colours of patriotism and loyalty, decorated the Catholic Women's League Rooms last night, when the Royal Society of St. George hold a most successful plain and fancy dress Christmas party. Flags bedecked the walls of the room, and on the front of the stage hung the shield, bearing a red cross on a white background, which is the emblem of the society. Two smaller shields were placed at the sides of the stage, where clusters of red and white roses were further signs that the spirit of Old England was still alive. From the roof hung clusters of gaily-lined balloons and streamers in scarlet and white, while tall vases of arum lilies decorated tlip end of the room, which had been arranged for sitting out. Members as they arrived wero presented with small cardboard shields, bearing their names and engraved in rod with a picture of St. George slaying the dragon.

The organising secretary was Mrs. P. Heath-Precst, who was dressed as a Victorian lady, and the host and hostess for the evening wore Mr, and Mrs. H. E. Burton, the former as the "Scarlet Pimpernel" and the latter in a Victorian gown of black and gold. Mrs. Hugh Kaspcr, chairman of the ladies' committee, was- in midnight blue crepe, and other members of the committee who were present were Mrs. W. F. Allen, who wore floral crepe; Mrs. F. H. Gifford, mulberry ring velvet; Mrs. Graham Reed, Victorian lady; Mrs. A. J. Clark, Chinese lady; and Mrs. C. Stonnont, Madame Butterfly. The prizes for the two most original costumes went to Mrs. G. Dowding, as a cracker, and Miss Jacrjue HeathPrecst, as a Christmas stocking. The two handsomest frocks were judged to be those of Mrs. A. Presling, "Queen of the Harem," and Mrs. R. C. Jamieson, Lady Pompadour. Songs were given by Mrs. Stoitnont, Mrs. Ernest Asher, Mrs. G. Nicholson, Mrs. J l '. Hobday, Miss J. Heath-Precst and Mr. F. H. Gifford, and recitations by Mrs. D. Matthews, Mrs. Burton and Miss J. Gifford.
