"FORBURY SYSTEM" CLOSE VOTE AT DUNEDIN The " Forbury system" of betting is evidently in jeopardy in its former stronghold. A long discussion took place at a meeting of the Forbury Park Trotting Club Committee on the system of betting to be used at the summer meeting. Mr. H. Archbold moved and Mr. D. C. Jolly seconded that the system be 75 and 25 per cent in a field of eight and 70, 20 and 10 per cent on a number exceeding eight. Mr. J. M. Samson moved as nn amendment, and Mr. J. Richardson seconded, that the club adhere to its present system, namely, 75 and 25 per cent on the win machine and place betting. Mr. Samson's amendment was carried by seven votes to five.

STEWARDS' CENSURE OVER-CONFIDENCE OF RIDER It is not often that the rider of a winning horse comes in for adverse criticism, but no praise was given E. Bartlo after his winning ride on Lynch Law, J. T. Jamieson's promising colt, when he had his first success in his division of the Juvenile Stakes at Moorefield. Indeed,'the action of Bartlo in pulling up the colt quickly when all danger of defeat appeared to be past, caused him to stop to a cantor, and Mangoola ran him to half a Length. The stewards censured Bartlo, who in all the circumstances was lucky not to have had his poor judgment penalised more severely

WON AT SIXTH ATTEMPT AN ENGLISH DERBY HISTORY Lord Astor hiul ill-luck in owing the runner-up of five Derbies, which many hope and expect will bo changed by Early School next year, but an even more unfortunate experience was that of the first Earl of Crosvcnor, whose colours first appeared in a Derby field in 1782, when his colt, Sweet Robin, was second. Other of his horses who ran second were Carlo Khan in 1784, Grantham and Meteor in the following years and Aurelius in 1788. After a third with brother to Skylark in 1789, the earl gained first and second with Rhadaniantlms and Asparagus in 1790.
