Mondaj Observations on conditions in Britain were made by Sir George Shirtcliife, who returned to Wellington by the Akaroa, from a trip to England. What impressed him most ' was the prosperous state of the country. There -was na doubt that the recovery had been steady and had bei?n based on traditional business lines, Sir George said. Many trades and industries were paying dividends of friini 10 to 15 per cent., a few were returning as much as 25 per cent, and others were making phenomenal profits. Wages were good and unemployment had been greatly reduced.
