TRAFFIC SPEED
LOCAL BESTRICTIONS ERECTION OF THE SIGNS WORK COMMENCES TO-DAY The first of the now 30 miles sin hour speed restriction signs will mnke tlieir appearance to-day, when patrols of the Automobile Association (Auckland) will commence the task of placing these warnings on all highways entering borough or town board districts in the Auckland Province. All the signs are to be erected before the Christmas holiday traffic starts. The work is being carried out by the Automobile Association under the authority of the Minister oi Transport, the Hon. I!. Semple. The touring manager of the association said last night that almost without exception local bodies had supported the suggestion that the 30 miles an hour speed restriction should «ppl> in the built-up portions of their areas and not out in the open country. Tim Transport Department had provided every facility for close co-operation between the Automobile Association and local bodies, and the Minister bad agreed to remove the 30 miles an hour limit from those sections of main road in borough and town board districts which could bo classified as open highways.
The sign indicating the commencement of a restricted area is an 18-inch disc with a border of flowing red enclosing a white circle, on which the figures 30 appear in black. The end of each area is to be marked by a white circle with a four and a-half inch black stripe placed diagonally at an angle of 45 degrees. Signs indicating areas from which restrictions have been lifted will not be erected before next week-end when authorisation for this work is given in the Gazette. In the meantime the Minister has approved the placing of signs at all the boundaries not affected by immediate de-restriction.
