FIRST TEST MATCH

The first test match between England and Australia has been correctly described as in an interesting stage. It is suggested that as the game moves toward its end, wear on the wicket will give the slow bowlers their opportunity. Ihen having won the toss will become a real advantage to England. To the supporters of the visiting side, the showing made after all the disasters and unfavourable indications of the games earlier in the tour will be particularly gratifying. It shows the will to win and the faculty of fighting back in adversity which are of such outstanding importance in test cricket. The way in which, in this match itself, recovery came after a start that promised very • bad.y, should be of great moral advantage to the team. Its heartening influence may extend far beyond the present game. England, naturally, is gratified at the dismissal of Bradman cheaply—at least cheaply for him. In comment on the Brisbane match it is suggested that he is an extraordinarily valuable asset to Australian cricket because of his magic attraction for the crowd. In previous test series he has also been a powerful factor on the Australian side because of his capacity for wearing down and even demoralising the bowling. Thus he not only made the way easier for his own team, he dulled the edge of its opponents' fighting spirit. It does not follow that because he has made no great score in the first innings of the first test he will not appear later in his old role. His dismissal has simply made better the chance which England had previously earned in this game by rising superior to an unfortunate beginning.
