CHARGES TO TOURISTS The over-charging of tourists visiting tho thermal regions was condemned b? the New Zealand Herald in the following extract fxjom tho issue of December 7, 188G: — ■? "Humours c6me from the Lake country of tourists desirous of visiting the thermal region being subjected to most extortionate charges, and that tins is causing great dissatisfaction. Indeed some travellers on reaching Rotorna and hearing of the exactions declined, it is said, to go any further. This state of affairs was the bane of the Ijake Conntry before the eruption, as scores .of disgusted tourists knew to their sorrow. It was hoped that, profiting by experience in the past, no one in that district would be guilty of 'killing tu« goose that lays the golden eggs,' but it looks very much as if this is being done. "There is some talk of the Government interfering and arranging with t»8 natives for the erection of accommodation for tourists and providing horses on a fixed tariff. It is imperatively necessary that the tourist charges b ® regulated to prevent the dissatisfactio at present felt."
