TRICES AT SMITIIFIELD CHILLED BEEF EASIER SHORT SUPPLIES OF LAMB Chilled beef was slightly rasier on the SmitliHold market last week owing to heavier supplies, according to a report issued by the New Zealand Meat Producers' Board. The frozen beef market is quiet. The market for lamb is steady and unchanged and New Zealand stocks are now verv small. Wethers are meeting with good trade at slightly higher prices. The market for ewes is steady and unchanged. Values for New Zealand porker pigs are higher on a firm market. Quotations for baconers again are nominal. Following are the latest quotations announced by the board, together with the values ruling at the close of the previous week:—

'None offering. The weekly quotations are based on actual sales of wholesale quantities of carcases of mutton or lamb or of quarters of beef delivered to Smithfield market and/or London stores, i To arrive at the equivalent ex ship values one farthing per pound should be deducted from the prices quoted above. Quotations given represent the average for the week and are not selected liitcs, but for parcels fairlv representative of the bulk of shipments now on offer.

STEADY WETHER PRICES MODERATE DEMAND FOR LAMBS J lie Bank of New Zealand has received the following advice from its London office at the close of business last week: Wethers: The demand and prices are steady. GALATEA ESTATE PURCHASES OF CATTLE [by telegraph—own correspondent] WHAKATANE, Saturday A total of 1030 head of yearling Polled Angus and Hereford steel's was purchased at Whakatane recently from the East toast by the management of the Government Galatea estate. Since the recent warm rains, there has been an abnormal growth of grass. The station at present is carrying 5000 cattle and 18,000 sheep. More beasts are urgently required to keep the growth down. The Galatea estate disposed of 162 fat bullocks yesterday, and further consignments will soon bo ready. The price realised was £IBOO.

QUEENSLAND SUGAR CROPS DRY WEATHER CONDITIONS Dry weather during October in the North Queensland sugar districts facilitated harvesting operations, and crushing proceeded at high speed in all mill areas. In the Ayr district dry conditions continued, and except for one fall of 11 points in September, no rain had been received since June. Tho irrigation plants have been in continuous operation. In the Macka.v and Proserpine districts tho cane crops were not actually suffering, except in a few isolated places, but the need for rain was being felt. In the Bundaberg and Isis districts, except for one or two storms yielding from a few points to a couplo of inches in isolated parts, October was drv.

The total rainfall in these districts this year has been only slightly half tho normal and the present position is such that the fate of next year's crop will largely depend on whether useful rains aro received in tho course of the next few weeks. In tho Bauple and Natnbour districts soaking rains were urgently required. The cane, however, appeared to have suffered less in these districts than other crops and vegetation.
