KING'S JOCKEY

NEW APPOINTMENT SELECTION OF CROUCH MODEST BUT DETERMINED [FROM A SPECIAL correspondent] LONDON, Nov. 4 The appointment of Jack Crouch, a 21-year-old jockey, to ride for the King next season lias caused some comment in racing circles, inasmuch as Joe Chi Ids. an<f latterly Fred Fox, both of whom rodo for King George, were men of mature years. Crouch, a modest and well-mannered lad, is only recently out of his apprenticeship. There has been some difficulty in finding a jockey of suitable ability and character for the post, and Brigadier Tomkinson, who manages the King's stables, has got over it in an original way by his recommendation of this promising young rider. When he was 11, Crouch had determined to become a jockey. But it was not until he was 14, and arrived at the stables of Stanley Wootton, that he saw his first racehorse in the flesh. The jockey, although only two months out of his apprenticeship, has. already shown brilliant form. He has 31 winners to his credit. He can go to the scale at 7st. 91b. (he was a midget of 4st. olb. when ho came to Kpsorn seven years ago). Ho has a sharp, pale face, brown eyes, thick brown hair. He said: "I was asked a fortnight ago if I would like to ride for the King next year. Of course I said yes, [ never dreamed of such an opportunity. I was delighted the day I heard that the King had approved.. r My father, a coach-painter, lives retired in Speedwell Street, New Cross. My mother died when I was seven. I have wanted to be a jockey ever since I can remember. My father did not approve, but when I got the chance of coming here he wished me the best of luck. He will be pleased at this news. "No, I have not a girl friend. I am not interested. I do not drink. Oh, yes, I smoke. I shall do my best | for the King. That is all I can say."
