OFFENCES AND FINES
Sir, —Tn your issue of November 17 you recorded the following fines imposed upon persons convicted on charges of intoxication while in charge of motor vehicles: —At Auckland, and £2; at Wairoa. £2O; at Palmerston North, £l.*); and at Uotorua, £lO. hi at least one case there was personal injury involved, and, of course, in all cases there was the possibility of loss of life or serious injury. On the same page of the paper you reported two fines of £T)O each imposed upon Chinese charged with smoking opium. Apparently it is a far more serious crime for a poor Chinese to smoke opium than it is for an intoxicated motorist to endanger the lives of innocent citizens. To my mind, the position would have been met more justly had the £oo fine*; been imposed upon the offending motorists. There is something here which calls for the attention of responsible authorities. Qukkr Justice.
