REMARKS RESENTED

SCHOOL CHAIRMAN'S VIEWS REPLY MADE BY BOARD Criticism of remarks reported to have been made by the Rev. W. C. Wood as chairman of the Papakura school com- - mittee was expressed at yesterday's - - meeting; of the Auckland . Education y Board by the chairman, Mr. T. U. Wells. " According to a press report, ' Mr. Wood stated that I was probably moulding my opinions to those of the -» Minister of Education," said Mr. Wells. "Those remarks are verging on •. the impertinent; in fact, they are offensive. I resent remarks of that sort." ' V ■ J - ' ' The matter had arisen over the question of the consolidation of schools around Papakura, Mr.. Wells stated. < Mr. A. Turner, secretary of the school committee, had approached him in regard to consolidation, but it had been revealed that five small schools near Papakura did not favour consolidation, while two were in favour of it, and \ two doubtful. As the majority were against consolidation, it would be foolish to go on with it, and the committee was written to, and informed to that effect. Mr. Turner, it was reported, had stated that "it looked like a complete change of front." This was not correct. Several members of the board expressed resentment the reported remarks) and it was decided to draft a reply. "
