FIFTY YEARS AGO
< THE CEMENT INDUSTRY One of NeAv* Zealand's major industries, the manufacture of cement, was being established half a century ago. An item in the New Zealand Heiuld of November 19, 1886, stated: — ".It is not often that testimony to the value and superiority of any Auckland industry comes from the South. As a fule, ordinary information about Auckland industries and progress is, in fact,' either suppressed by southern journals or given so meagrely that their usual fate is to be damned with faint praise. This, however, renders any testimony to their superiority the more valuable when it docs happen to be boston ed. "Messrs. Wilson, of Mahurangi, aro to be especially congratulated on the result of the competitive test to which their cement was subjected at Lyttelton, which showed that this locallymanufactured article stood a strain of 75 per cent more than any imported samples."
