TYPHOID FEVER
INCIDENCE AMONG MAORIS HOSPITAL BOARD'S CONCERN Attention to the incidence of typhoid fever among Maori communities was drawn by Dr. J. P. Hastings at yesterday's meeting of the Auckland Hospital Board. Of the 73.000 Maoris in New Zealand, 103 suffered from typhoid fever during the year ending March 31, 1936. said Dr. Hastings, while of about 1,500,000 white people only 84 had been infected. If the figures were in proportion, only four Maoris should be listed. A great deal more than in the past would have to be done toward caring for the health of the Maoris. The white people were to blame, » contributing factor being the spoiling of the sources of the Maoris' fish foods by sewage. The following resolution was car* ried: "That the attention of the Government be drawn to the incidence of typhoid fever among the Maori communities.''
