SHIRT FACTORY FIRE
OUTBREAK IST CITY i MATERIAL DESTROYED DAMAGE TO £4OO Damage to the extent of approximately £4OO was done fry a fire which broke out among bolts ofj shirt material stored in the cutting frooin on the second floor of the factory of Ambler and Company, Limited, &hirt manufacturers, in Wellesley Street West, shortly before 10.30 p.m>. last night Six fire engines answereel the alarm, which was given by the j caretaker in a building opposite, but tJj e firemen of one machine only were iiblc to extinguish the blaze in abajut half an hour. ! "When the firemen arriTeoL the cutting room was half-filled byv clouds of smoke, and bolts of material stacked on shelves near the front of the building were blazing. All the windows were opened to allow the smoke to /get away, and six firemen began to boJta of burning -cloth and extinguish flames. 5 • In order to avoid damage 'to other stock in the room salvage sheets were placed over it, and only the "fWst-aid" hose, which is of a narrow gauge for the purpose, was used. The{ water supply was obtained from the 4fl-gallon tank on the engine. !
A member of the firm, Mr.\ F. N. Ambler, stated last night that tall the stock was covered by but the damage would be heavy jas the bolts spoiled by fire would practically useless. i
