OrENING OF THE SEASON AUCKLAND CENTRE CARNIVAL FRANKHAM IN EARLY FORM An outstanding free-style swim of 54 • !-"s for 100 yards by R. ]{. Frankliam was the feature of the opening carnival of the season held at the Tepid Baths last evening by the Auckland Centre of the \ew Zealand Amateur Swimming Association. After giving away starts of more than half the length of the baths to bis opponents in a heat of the 100 yards men's handicap, the Dominion champion swain a most impressive race. His time was only a fifth of a second outside the .New Zealand record, which he established last year. In tlio final Frankliam found the handicaps too severe, but again swam well to return 00 -I-ss. A former Auckland broaststroko champion, J. Magee, showed a glimpse of his best form in winning the final of the TOO yards open brcaststroko handicap from scratch, his time for both heat and final being 7<i 4-ss. The 200 yards business houses' relay championship for teams of six resulted in a comfortable wn for the Milne and Choyce representatives. An inter-club relay for combined intermediate and junior teams, also over a distance of '->oo yards, was won easily by Waiteinata, with Ponsonby second. There was an exciting finish in the final of the ladies' 100 yards handicap in which Misses K. Grey, X. Ludlov, - and M. Leydon H[-pleached the finish in a line. Miss Grey, who is the Auckland intermediate lady champion, won by a touch with the other two finishing in the order mentioned. LEARN-TO-SWIM WEEK The chairman of the Auckland Swimming and Life-saving Tuition Committee, Mr. T. C. Hobbs-Jones, stated yesterday that its tearn-to-swim week would be held from February 22 to February 27 to coincide with the national campnign of the New Zealand Central Committee of Swimming and Lifesaving. The Auckland committee had originallv proposed to conduct the learn-to-swim week from December 1-1 to December 20. A public meeting, said Mr. Hobbs-Jones, would be convened shortly in Auckland to further the objects of the campaign, and it was hoped that the Minister of Internal Affairs, the lion. W. E. Parry, would preside. OVERSEAS TOUR APPROVED The organisation by the Auckland Centre nf the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association and affiliated clubs of a New Zealand tour this summer by overseas champions was approved by a meeting of members and supporters of the Otahuhu Amateur Swimming Club. The question of obtaining £'s2, the club's share of the guarantee, was referred to the committee. BAY OF PLENTY CENTRE [ TIY TKI.KOKAPH —OWN CORRESPONDENT] ROTORUA, Tuesday The formation of a swimming centre was decided upon by delegates from the various Bay of Plenty clubs, who attended a meeting at Botorua on Saturday.
