OPENING OF SEASON COMBINED EVENTS ARRANGED CONTESTS NEXT SATURDAY hv sriNnniFT The official opening of tho 1936-37 yachting season in Auckland will take place on Saturday afternoon, when cruising and harbour races will ho held under the control of- the Auckland Yacht and Motor-Boat Association. All events will start off King's Wharf, the starting line being between the tower and a mark moored north. All the Auckland clubs will be taking part and in addition the Howiek Sailing Club, which has recently joined the association, will also be represented. With the. exception of tho Roj-al New Zealand Yacht Squadron, which will hold a general handicap for keel yachts and a race for class M, all the clubs will hold combined class races. In the combined events, the small keel yachts, mullet boats and launches will race to Islington Bay and tho 18ft. and under classes will compete over harbour courses. The destination for the squadron keel yachts will not bo decided until Saturday morning. The live-flag system of starting will bo used for all clubs, with the exception of the squadron, in which case tho keel yachts will be started under the Yacht Racing Association's method of starting. JUBILEE REGATTA ARRANG EM EXTS AT DKVOXPOIIT Arrangements for tho regatta which is being held by tho Devonport Yacht Club in conjunction with the Devonport Juliileo Committee, are well in hand. The regatta will take placo on Saturday, November 28. and will bo held off Devonport Wharf. A suitable vessel will be secured as flagship, all races starting and finishing between the wharf and flic flagship. Ali classes ol yachts, including yacht sailing dinghies, will be catered for. Tho first prize in the race lor keel yachts will be £'l 10s and a jubilee pennant. In the races lor classes V and S and T, X and Y, the first prize will lie £2 10s and a jubilee pennant. Cash prizes will bo awarded in all other classes, and tho winner will also receive a jubilee pennant. BOATS CHANGE HANDS NEW YACHT LAUNCH El) Mr. N. J. Campbell, of Birkenhead, has purchased the .'lßft. motor-yacht Raira, lately owned by .Air. A. Foster, of Devonport. The .'loft, cutter, Rowa. lately owned by the Nobel Explosive Company, has been purchased by .Mr. H. Carter, of Mount Eden, who intends converting it into a pleasure craft. The 16ft. S class boat Aratu, which raced in the Manukau last season, has been purchased by Mr. T. Finlayson. of Devonport. Arat'u will bo a competitor in the combined races on Saturday. The new 14ft. Y class boat, Ayesha, built by Mr. P. Willetts for Air. M. Mason, of Devonport. was launched during the week-end. Tho new craft, which is painted green, has a beam of Gft. 6in. and is gaff rigged. Her registered number is Y76. The M class boat, Marateaj which is now owned by Mr. J. Kyd, has been fitted with a new mast and also a new suit of sails.
