MELBOURNE CUP WINNER STAYING POWER PROVED Racehorses frequently cross the Tasman, but there have been few such distinguished "passengers" as Wotan, winner of the Melbourne Cup in sensational fashion, who returned to New Zealand on board the Awatca yesterday. Although his arrival created less excitement than that of other famous New Zealanders, "Wotan was unofficially received by a small and admiring audience when he landed. Wotan's three owners, the brothers R., W. and T. A. Smith, of Hawera, were also on board, and they spoke proudly of the horse that sprang one of the biggest surprises in the history of the Melbourne Cup, and how thev had a confidence in him that was shared by few people. "We gave him a good chance. I thought lie would win," said Mr. R. Smith. Mr. Smith added that Wotan did not do well up to the time of the Caulfield Cup but then ho came on splendidly. Quite a few New Zealanders decided to support Wotan, who had a very good run all the way in the big race, and they were amply rewarded. Trainer's Work "Wo had a fairly big win," said Mr. Smith, but ho would not disclose the amount. "He deserves most of the credit," remarked Mr. W. Smith, referring to the work of the trainer, Mr. J. Fryer. "Ho brought this horso back from a dead horso to a good one." Mr. Fryer, who was also a passenger by the Awatea, described Wotan as a highly strung horse with great staying ability. For that reason ho was given a. good sporting chanco in the Melbourne Cup. The track was heavy two days before the race, but it was good on the day, and Wotan's chances were improved. He was well back at one stage, but made his way through the field, and, despite a wide run at the turn, settled down to a wonderful sustained effort and won the cup in record time for Australia and New Zealand. Wotan was given only light preparation before the race, and they trusted to his staying power to pull him through, stated Mr. Fryer. Ho had improved considerably, for when he ran in Wanganui last .Time a moderate horso would have beaten him. Mr. Fryer, who has been training for .'SO years, was very pleased at the success of the trip, for he had always had the ambition to win a great race, although he has had considerable success in the Dominion. Wotan to be Spelled Wotan had no special diet before the race, and has no particular tastes like some great racehorses of the past. His feed was taken from New Zealand to Melbourne. The name of the Melbourne Cup winner is that of one of the gods in the ancient Norso mythology, and was chosen for him by Sir Thomas Wilford. Wotan returned in good health, and the Smith brothers intend to spell him at Hawera. Ho will not bo raced beforo the autumn, and although it has not been decided where he will compote, it is likely that ho will make the trip to Australia again. After a few hours at Kllerslie Wotan left for Hawera by the afternoon express. Ho travelled in a newly painted horse box equipped with steam heating.
