CASE FROM THE NORTH A sentence of three months' imprisonment with hard labour was imposed by Mr. Justice Fair in the Supreme Court yesterday on Kahu Wi Matin for unlawful carnal knowledge of a Maori girl under 10 years of age. Matin had been committed for sentence from Haxveno. Mr. Guy, who appeared for accused, said that lie had borne an irreproachable character. There wore several mitigating circumstances His Honor said the offences had oxtended over 12 months and started when the girl was only 14 years of age. He found himself unable to grant probation for an offence of this kind when it had beon committed on many occasions. All Maoris, as well as pakelias, know by this time that in doing this they were breaking tho law. This man was very young, but young Mnoris must realiso that they must obey the law and protect young girls. His Honor then imposed sontenoo.
