SCHOOL TO UNIVERSITY

RECORD OF ATTENDANCES An interesting graph, compiled by tho registrar of Auckland University College, Mr. M. 1?. O'Shea, showing the percentage of boys in New Zealand going to university after completing post-primary education, was submitted to a meeting of tho University College Council yesterday. From 1927 until 1935, inclusive, tho percentage of boys going to university from secondary schools only was as follows: —1927, 7 per cent; 1928, 5; 1929, 3; 1930, 7; 1931, 9; 1932, 8; 1933, 6; 1931, 5; 1935, 5. From all post-primarv schools the percentages were:—l 92/, 4; 1928, 3; 1929, 2; 1930, 4; 1931, 4; 1932, 4; 1933, 3; 1934, 3; 1935, 3. "It appears that in years of good business returns the number going to univcrsitv decreases," said Mr. O'Shea. "For example, the figure was as low as 3 per cent in 1929. When we come to 1931 we find the maximum figure of 9 per cent, at a time when the depression was bad."
