PRISON SENTENCE
NEGLIGENT DRIVING ACCUSED ALTERS PLEA NEW PROCEDURE FOLLOWED [ntOM OUH own couukspondknt] HAMILTON, Monday The first case in Now Zealand under Section 42 of tho Statutes Amendment Act, 1036, came before Mr. Justice Callan in tho Hamilton Supreme Court today, when a young man, Francis Henry Bird, altered tho plea of not guilty which ho made in tho lower Court to one of guilty with respect to a charge of negligent driving causing bodily injury. Tho circumstances were that when accused was driving a motor-lorry along the Maungatautari .Road, Cambridge, on the night of June 7 he collided with a motor-cycle ridden by George Head and seriously injured Head. Bird did not stop. Neither vehicle carried lights. Mr. W. J. King, said that Bird was a young Englishman of excellent character. Counsel admitted that the vehicle ho was driving had neither lights nor horn. Head was on tho correct side of tho road, but carried no lights on his machine. His Honor said tho vehicle prisoner drove was ono that emphatically should not have been taken on the road, especially at night. The case was not one for probation. Prisoner was sentenced to six months' imprisonment.
