DESTRUCTION BY SHAGS
NUMBER OF FISH EATEN , NEED FOR CONTROL URGED . [bv telegraph—press association]! CHBISTCHUSCH, Frida:i' The shag is far more destructive of fish than any human poacher, according to some of the delegates who attended the conference of the South Island Acclimatisation Societies today. One delegate said he estimated that every shag took and ate five fish a day, and he stated that if shags were under control there would be no need for rangers or-restrictions on fishing. It was decided that the need for some control over shags should be referred to the South Island Council of Acclimatisation Societies. Mr. G. Turner (Otago), urged the need for the control of stoats and weasels for the protection of game and native birds. Mr. P. McKenzie (Lakes County), said his district was infested with rabbits and no move for the destruction of stoats and weasels could be made there. Farmers would strongly oppose the destruction of the natural enemies of the rabbit.
The matter was left to the newly-con-stituted South Island council.
