EPSOM TRIALS
FAST GRASS TRACK TROTTERS WORK SOLIDLY AUDO PATCH IMPRESSES BY ABAYDOS On the grass track at Epsom day solid trials were shown by the trotters Audo Patch, Young Rodney, Mountain Sun and Gala Day, the firstnamed recording 1.9, tho fastest halfmile. The best pacing eifqrts were thoso of Star Pronto, 1.6 4-5; Kewpie's Creet, 1.7 3-5; Charteris Bay, 1.8; Cherrill. 1.9; Queenie Direct, Tangaroa, Bisrmith, 1.10; Worthy Quest, 1.10 2-5; Pirate's Last, Treasure Bond, Aerial Bell, 1.10 3-5; and Forest Jewel, 1-10 4-5. The flags were out about 45ft. and the track was hard and fast. Audo Patch (C. G. Lee) conceded Mountain Sun (W. Fleming) five seconds in two miles and beat him in 4.59 3-5. Mountain Sun ran to the mile in 2.38 and was still leading at tho mile and a-half in 3.55. Audo Patch was with the leader at the straight, and, driven out, ho finished strongly, to run the last half in 1.9. Audo Patch has made good progress and is regaining form. Mountain Sun gave of his best', trotting the last mile in 2.27 and tho half in 1.10. When tackled-by Audo Patch ■ he hung on gamely. He is improving with each workout. Derby Fame (L. Cavalier), in saddle, and Gala Day (T. Roe), went a mile, the former being slow to strike a gait. He was with the trotter at the halfmile in 1.15, but Gala Day shaded him at the finish in 2.27, although Derby Fame did not appear to be doing his best. Gala Day's Second Task Gala Day then assisted Young Rodney (W. C. Willetts) on the last mile and a-half of his two miles. Gala Day . „ . took Young Rodney to the mile in 2.34 and ran the next half in 1.15. Young Rodney was under pressure to beat Gala Day in the run home, going 5.0, the last half in 1.11. He is very fit. Gala Day trotted without mistake in 3.43 3-5, the last half in 1.11 3-5 and finished on gamely. After faulting in his first run out, Dilfashion (D. O. Jones) settled down, completing two miles in 5.9. He trotted the last mile in 2.30, each half at the isame rate. Worthy Quest (M. Connolly) led at the mile and a-quarter from Queenk* Direct (A. Cole), but there was not much pace. Queenie Direct just failed to reach the leader after running the last half in 1.10. Worthy Quest recorded 3.13, the last half in 1.10 Si-5. For horses ip. their class Queenie Direct and Worthy Quest put up smart times for the final half-mile. Rita's Triumph (J. Forgessen) trotted a mile and three-quarters in 4.29, going soundly throughout. She went the last mile in 2.28, the second to last half, her best section, in 1.13. Manna's Son (L. Laver) was not after time when he took 5.25 to go two miles. The mile showed 2.38 and the final half 1.16 3-5. Star Pronto In Form Treasure Bond (W. McDonald) was not on a time-making mission. His first - mile took 2.39. He reached the mile and a-half in 3.54 and improved the j pace to finish in 5.4 3-5. Tangaroa (C. G. Lee) went away from the barrier at the mile and a-quarter, being slow to strike his gait, but after reaching the six furlongs in 1.58 hit out with more dash to complete the task in 3.8. Kewpie's Crest (J. Gee) led out from the mile and a-half two lengths ahead of Charteris Bay (G. Cole), with Star Pronto (W- Dyer) moving off three seconds later. Star Pronto was almost alongside the leaders at tho mile in 2.33 2-5, and, going comfortably, he finished in front of Kewpie's Crest in 3.40 1-5. He paced evenly and is physically fit. Kewpie's Crest went . lazily while in front, but when joined by the others put dash into his work. He finished resolutely, going the last mile and a-quarter in 3.2. Charteris Bay gave his usual sound unhoppled display. Pirate's Last (L. J. Mahoney) and Forest Jewel (L. Mitchell) went away from the mile and a-quarter. In a good set-to over the last quarter they passed the post together in 3.7. Great Sonoma (C. M. Morrison) trotted the first mile of 12 fuxlongs in 2.40 2-5, but left his feet. He completed the task in 3.54 2-5, the last half in 1.14. Lucky Love Does Best Travis (J. Peters), Munga Tangi (L. Laver), Lucky Love (W. C. Willetts) and Bismuth (A. McGarry) left the mile and a-half as named, there being two seconds between the first and last. Travis led to the half in 1.15, Bismuth, who was not going kindly, being well back. A<i the mile in 2.27 Munga Tangi was alongside Travis, with Lucky Love closo up. Crossing the top Bismuth moved up. Lucky Love, finishing strongly, shaded Travis, with Bismuth closo up. The winner went 3.39, tho last half in 1.11 3-5. He is in great heart. Travis showed improvement by staying on much better, wliilo Bismuth was responsible for a good effort in the final stages, registering 2.24 for the last mile. Munga. Tangi was not driven out. Golden Maid (L. J. Mahoney) trotted without mistake over a mile and a-half in 3.55, tho last half in 1.16. Princess Onyx (E. N. Kennerley)., unhoppled, was allotted a two miles task, but was not extended, the last mile and. a-quarter showing 3.22. She set off to run a useful half, but broke. Gold Pointer (W. C. Willetts) went from a barrier start and took 3.17 for a mile and a-quarter, but improved to show 1.15 for the last half. Tho lialfbrothcr to Young Rodney has been eased on account of a cold, but may race oil tho second day. Sprint by Cherrill At the third attempt Cherrill (L. J. Mahoney) got away evenly to run a' mile and a-half in 3.41. She took 39s to go tho first quarter and reached tho mile in 2.32. She came homo the last half nicely in 1.9. Reception (A. J. Forbes), after going a little over a mile, sprinted to tho post and was pulled up. Ho is well seasoned. ' Count Parrish trotted a mile and a-half in 4.0, tho last half in 1.17. He will require some racing before reaching his best. Aerial Bell (C. G. Lee) worked a mile and a-half in 3.48 3-5, tho last milo in 2.24 3-5. Indiana (L. McMahon) went away six seconds behind Dick Redmond (A. Brown) and Amathos (L. Cavalier) for a mile run and beat the last-named, to run tho last half in 1.15. Dick Redmond, who has been trotting solidy, broke after going five furlongs. The two-year-old Aniatlios paced freely. • On tho dirt, which was in fine order, Gay Sister worked a steady, two miles, the last one in 2.22 and the half in 1.9. Mr. J. Gavin, Auckland Trotting Club starter, despatched several young - horses from the barrier. The outside of tho course proper will again be available for fast work to-morrow morning.
