NORTHCOTE WOMEN
LEAGUE MEMBERS' DAY Tho members' afternoon of the Northcote Women's Progressive League held yesterday in the Parish Hall was largely attended. Tho president, Mrs. A. Campbell, extended a cordial welcome to tho gathering, and particularly to the original members present, Mesdaines A. E. Taylor, D. P. O'Learv, J. W. McLaughlin, T. C. Alloly, J. R. Bethwaite, W. Tonar, W. E. Richardson, H. MacKinnon, J. W. Weeks and Miss L. A. Tremain. Baskets made by Miss L. A. Tremain, and filled with roses arranged by her, were presented to the three oldest ladies present, Mesdames M. A. Whitcombe, J. W. Weeks and I. W. Muirhead. Included among a splendid display of work done by members was embroidery made by Mrs. M. A. Whitcombe in her 88th year, and fine knitting made by Mrs. W. J. Weeks, in her 80th year. Mrs. W. Tonar showed a beautiful piece of Honiton la<;e, and Miss C. J. Flatt a piece of bor own fine Irish crochet. Three articles, a hold-all, a darning bag, and a garden cushion, made from coarse sugar bags, were shown by Mrs. T. C. Alloly. These won prizes at tho Winter Show.
The sum of £'3 was allocated from the proceeds of the recent bring-and-buy stall for Christmas cheer for returned soldiers at the Auckland Mental Hospital, the balance of £1 7s to form the nucleus of a benevolent fund to be used as occasion required. References were made by Mesdames D. P. O'Leary and A. E. Taylor to the intended presentation from the women of New Zealand to the Wellington Art Gallery of a portrait of Queen Mary, and 41 members subscribed forthwith toward this gift. It was resolved to write to the Minister of Internal Affairs, tho Hon. W. E. Parry, requesting the prohibition of keeping New Zealand native birds in captivity in zoological gardens. A letter of thanks was received from the St. John Ambulance Association for the collection of £3O 3s 7d by the members. The business before the National Council of Women was reviewed by Mrs. F. C. Swinbank. Miss M. W. Weeks gave an interesting talk on tho cultivation of Iceland poppies for professional and home uses, and presented a bunch of her own growing to tho president. The one-act play "Superstition," written by Madge Coleerave, and produced by Mrs. P. Minns, was presented by Mesdames A. E. Tremain, J. D. Anthony, C. H. Colegrave and Miss Winifred Johnson. The cast presented Mrs. Coleerrave, the authoress, with a bouquet. Enjoyable glees were sung by Mesdames W. F. Ward. A. J. Lennon, Miss C. J. Williamson (soprano), Mesdames W. E. Richardson and W. Raekett and Mrs. A. S. Tarrant and Miss W. Johnson (tenor), the accompanist being Mrs. N. R. Harris.
