OTAHUHU CLUB'S SEASON NEW OFFICERS ELECTED The adverse effect on the finances of the Otahuhu Amateur Athletic Club through inclement weather interfering with attendances at evening sports meetings was mentioned at the annual meeting. Mr. F. 'W. Grey presided over an attendance of about 40. It was reported that the credit balance of £45 at the commencement of the year had been reduced to about £5 in consequence of smaller returns. The president of the Auckland Centre, Mr. 11. L. Towers, congratulated tho club on its progress during its short career. He expressed the hope that it would be possible this year to arrange for Dominion championship competitions for juniors and lady athletes. It. would be a wiso policy to encourage the juniors, who were the hope of all athletic movements. Warm appreciation was expressed of the services rendered by the retiring secretary. Mr. 0. R. Porter, who was leaving the district. Several speakers stated that the progress of the club had been in very larse measure duo to the indefatigable efforts and enthusiasm of Mr. Porter. It was unanimously decided to make him a life member. Several suggestions were submitted for the consideration of the incoming committee, one being that field events be arranged this season for lady athletes. Officers were elected as follows: —Patron, Mr. H. T. Clements; president, Sir. F. W. Grey; vice-presidents, the same as last year; secretary, appointment left in committee's hands; treasurer, Mr. H. Ilayr; auditor, Mr. R. W. F. Wood; club captain, Mr. F. Arnold; ladies' captain, Mrs. M. Moore; handicappers. athletes. Mr. W. McManus; cyclists, Mr. T. Faithful; delegates to Auckland Centre, Messrs. C. R. Porter and M. Moore; delegates to Centre Ladies' Sub-committee, Mrs. Moore; committee, Messrs. J. Clark. H. Trevena, C. Clark. C. S. Jones. J. Mann, T. Kelly, S. Clark, M. Moore. J. Simpson, W. McManus.
ANNUAL STEEPLECHASES WHANGAREI HIGH SCHOOL [jit TELKGRArn —own correspon*df,nt] WHANGAREI, Thursday The annual steeplechases of (he Whangarei High School were held (his afternoon in perfect weather. There was a large number of spectators in Cairnficld Road, from where (he events commenced and finished. Owing to (ho nature of the country, those present were ahle to follow the progress of the competitors for practically the whole of ' the course. The races were run under sealed handicaps, and (he handicap results will not bo available until to-morrow. The following finished first for championship points, (he first in each case being awarded a cup for fastest time: — Junior approximately -'/ i miles. IHO starters: ('. Nesbit. I; I. Ferguson, 2; R. R. Ryder, presiding. The balance-sheet disclosed a small credit on the year's activities. In his annual report fhe president said the club had experienced a successful season, although (lie number of active members was low for a town the size of Whangarei The election of officers resulted Patron, Mr. 11. 0. The opening meeting was left with the executive lo arrange. The president reported that a strong team from the Old Grammarians Club, Auckland, comprising several New Zealand nnd provincial champions, would be competing in the amateur running events at (he Whangarei Agricultural and Pastoral Society's annual gymkhana during Labour week-end, nnd he hoped members of the club would do some strenuous training so as to be in a position to provide adequate competition for (he visitors.
