SPEEDING MOTORISTS

THREE OFFENDERS FINED TE AWAMUTU PROSECUTIONS [from our own correspondent] TE AWAMTJTTJ, Thursday Charges of exceeding the speed limit near Ohaupo were preferred against three motorists in the 'lo Awamutu Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. F. H, Levien, S.M. In the case of Henry P. Carr, of Hamilton, the inspector said he saw a car swing round a corner at Ohaupo and continue through the business, portion at a high speed. He immediately followed, and although ho attained a speed of 65 miles an hour ho was unable to overtake it. He later encountered the car after it had stopped on account of two horses being on tho road. The car had skidded right across tho road in an effort to avoid them. Defendant was well known in tho locality lor the high speeds at which ho travelled and was regarded as a menace.

Mr. J. Oliphant, for defendant, said lie had received instructions to plead guilty, although defendant had estimated his speed at 35 miles an hour. There was very little trnfiie on the road at tho time and defendant had never previously been prosecuted. In imposing a fine of £-'3 and costs, the magistrate said that if it had been a second olFcnee the fine would have been £5 and defendant's licence would have been cancelled for a period. Arthur Frederick Pearson, of Orakci, who was similarly charged, wrote admitting the offence. The inspector said defendant passed the Ohanpo school at 60 miles an hour, which was reduced to 50 miles an hour as he passed through the township. Defendant was fined £5 and his licence was endorsed. in the case of Kvic John Ulander. of New Plymouth, the inspector said defendant entered the township at 50 miles an hour, which was reduced to 40 miles an hour as he passed through. A fine of £2 10s, and costs, was imposed..
