WAITAKERE DRIVE
TURNING OF FIRST SOD CEREMONY THIS AFTERNOON It is expected that there will be a large gathering of representatives of local bodies , and of the public on the aitakore Ranges this afternoon, when His Excellency the Governor-General, Viscount Galway, will turn the first sod of the new Waitakere Scenic Drive. The ceremony is fixed for 3 p.m. and will take place at a point beyond the end of the Exhibition Drive, on the Blue Mountains Estate, about a-quarter of a mile from the NiJiotupu post office, on the Glen Eden-Piha Road.
The speakers, in addition to Lord Galway, will be the Mayor of Auckland, Mr. Ernest Davis, and the AttorneyGeneral, tho Hon. H. G. R. Mason. SURVEY OF THE ROUTE RAPID PROGRESS MADE The detailed survey of the route of the Waitakere Scenic Drive is being expedited by a party, of Public Works Department surveyors and assistants. The party has already covered the first five miles from Titirangi along the lino of the Exhibition Drive, where the alignment of the widened road has been defined. The survey is now being carried along the ridge, where in some places portions of existing roads will be incorporated, but in others virgin hush or private property will have to be traversed. So far the 50 men engaged on the formation of the road are employed on widening and improving the Exhibition Drive, which forms the first section of the new route. Later, as new country is entered, more men will bo engaged, until about 200 are employed.
