BIRKENHEAD COUNCIL

The town clerk reported to a meeting of the Birkenhead Borough Council last night that the contractors for the installation of the sewerage system started work last month, and 43 married men had been employed, 33 being residents of Birkenhead. The subsidy from the Unemployment Board was payable in respect of 26 of these registered men. The receipt of monthly payments from consumers for the Waitemata Power Board by the Birkenhead council is an uneconomic proposition, according to a statement made by the town clerk. The Finance Committee is to consider the advisability of terminating the arrangement.
