CENTENNIAL EXHIBITION
COMPANY IN WELLINGTON LOCAL BODY SUBSCRIPTIONS An invitation to subscribe to the proposed centennial exhibition company was received by the One Tree Hill - Borough Council last night from the Mayor of Wellington, Mr. T. C. A« Hislop, who forwarded a prospectus. " The promoters in Wellington are anxious to obtain a good response from the whole of New Zealand to give national interest to the undertaking," said Mr. Hislop, "and as it is hoped to return a large proportion of the capital on winding-up, the amount of ultimate expenditure by subscribers should be quite small. "It is expected that £IOO,OOO at least will be subscribed in Wellington. That would leave 1:50.000 to be subscribed by the rest of New or practically one share of £1 for every 12 persons in the boroughs with over 6000 population. That does not appear to be tm unduly optimistic forecast. - Legislation is being brought down this session to empower local authorities to take up shares." ,> The. clerk, Mr. A. Leese, saidr'that on the suggested basis the borough share would be £670. The letter was referred to the Finance Committee.
