TRADE DEADLOCK
AUSTRALIA AND JAPAN TOKIO. Oct. 6 "Australia's latest proposals for a settlement of the trade deadlock with Japan are unsatisfactory," is the tenor of a statement made to-day by the Foreign Office spokesman, Mr. Amau.
The Federal Cabinet is optimistic about a settlement of the trade dispute with Japan, though Ministers do nob anticipate a settlement to be reached immediately, said the Sydney Morning Herald in a recent issue. It is pointed out that Japan has not yet felt the full effects of the Australian restrictions of the importation of Japanese goods because concessions were allowed by Australia on certain goods which had been already ordered and paid for. Moreover, the largo stocks of wool held in Japan before this season's wool sales began enabled that country to refrain temporarily from buying Australian wool. It is expected that when those stocks are exhausted, the Japanese will bo obliged to buy Australian wool again.
