MARCH TO LONDON
JARROW UNEMPLOYED PETITION FOR WORK CARRIED LONDON, Oct. 6 Two hundred unemployed men have started on a march to London from Jarrow. They are carrying an oak casket containing a petition with 11,572 signatures, pleading for work for the Jarrow shipyards and heavy industries. They propose to present the petition to Parliament. The Bishop of Jarrow, Dr. J. G. Gordon, blessed the marchers, who are accompanied by medical students, a cook and a barber. MEN'S OBJECTIVE
PLIGHT OF THEIR TOWN (Received October 0, 6.5 p.m.) British Wireless BUGBY, Oct. 5 The objective of tho unemployed marcher:? from Jarrow to London is to draw attention to the plight of their town, which has one of the highest percentages of unemployment in the whole country. Recently it suffered a blow to its hopes of alleviation of its distress aroused by the plans for steelworks, which later were cancelled owing to rationalisation schemes within the steel industry itself. The Mayor of Jarrow urged the men to maintain the credit of the town they represent by their conduct in London and on the way there.
