ROUND TABLE CLUB
ADDRESS ON GERMANY The speaker at a meeting of the Business and Professional Women's Round Table Club on Jlonday evening was Air. K. W. Schmidt, his subject being "Germany To-day." Air. Schmidt spoke of the many changes that had taken place in Germany in recent years, and stated that the future held wonderful possibilities for that country. The spread of the Youth Movement was also discussed by the speaker, who referred to the interest which was shown in international affairs by the younger generation. Mr. Schmidt also spoke of the way in which the German Government helped young couples to marry. Provided the husband's earnings came within the specified scale, the couple received the sum of £SO, repayable on very easy terms. Rebates were given with the' birth of each child. It was significant that there had been 350,000 more marriages within the year and that the birthrate had increased by approximately 3 per cent. A description was given by the speaker of the Labour Service, to which every young person in Germany had to give six months' service, when they were trained in useful employment. Following this the boys had to spend two years in military service, with a consequent improvement in the nation's physical fitness.
