KING CAROL'S FRIEND
MADAME LUPESCU WEDS INFLUENCE OVER MONARCH LONDON, Oct. 2 King Carol's auburn-haired friend, Mme. Lupeseu, for whom, while Crown Prince, he renounced his right 6 of succession to the Throne, has married a high official at the Rumanian Court and is now living in the Palace at Bucharest.
Magda Lupescu, whose real name is Wolff, has been a friend of King Carol since 1922, shortly after his morganatic marriage with Mine. Lambrivo ■ was broken up and he married Princess Helen of Greece.
In 1926, Carol, who was "then Crown Prince, renounced his rights to the succession and went to live with Mme. Lupescu in Venice. His dramatic return to Rumania in 1930, when he was proclaimed King, is attributed to her influence. Her supposed interference in
politics aroused great resentment against her. This was exacerbated by Mme. Lupescu's Jewish origin, antiSemitism being very prevalent in Rumania. The military rising two years ago was supposed to have boon directed mainly against her.
