THE MONSTER AGAIN CONCERN IN WAIKATO The stories ahout the \\ aikato monster were being given considerable publicity half a century ago. The death o a child was even stated to have been caused by the mysterious creature. Jbe following item from the- Hkkau* s Huntly correspondent appeared i" l ' ie issue of October 5, 1S8U: "Great interest is lelt here retailing the alligator or tauiwha seen a Hamilton. The flesh of the right arm completely stripped from the bone. 1J child had only been absent from 1 parents for 20 minutes. The Maoris we greatly concerned and said a taniw r had done the deed. A fortnight gentlemen tourists who came to 1 place by boat from Hamilton. I* 3 ..? they saw a monster with a lieau ' an alligator making up river betwc here and JSgaruawahia."
