NEW COASTAL VESSEL
LONG VOYAGE ENDED ARRIVAL AT AUCKLAND After a voyage of 105 days from Glasgow tho new motor-ship Ranginui arrived at Auckland on Saturday morning and is at Central Wharf. The vessel was built by Messrs. Scott and Son at Bowling, near Glasgow, for Mr. George Niceol, and she is to be used in the local coastal trade.
Tho Ilanginui sailed from Glasgow 011 June 20 and during tho 13,000 miles voyago almost continuous head winds delayed her progress. Calls wero made at Gibraltar, Port Said, Aden, Singapore and Townsvillo, where her oil fuel bunkers were replenished. She was delayed for two weeks at Aden owing to strong monsoonal gales. After leaving Townsvillo the Kanginui encountered a continuous south-east swell, which further delayed her arrival at Auckland.
She is a steel vessel of 158' tons gross and is fitted with twin full Diesel engines, each of 125 h.p. Her length is 106 ft. overall and she has a 221't. beam and a 6ft. draught. Her speed during her trials was nine knots. She has one mast, which is fitted between two hatches, both leading into tho 0110 large hold. In appearance she is not unlike tho local -coastal vessels of her own size built by Mr. Niceol. She is strongly constructed for trading to bar harbours, but the service sho is to bo engaged in has not been announced. Captain A. H. Burgess, formerly master of the mission steamer Southern Cross, is in command.
