HOWICK TO MAN UREWA The sum cf £750 has been allocated by/the Main Highways Board on a subsidy basis cf £3 for £1 for reconstruction and tar-sealing work on the Howick-Manurewa main highway, according to advice received by tho Howick Towi Board at ite meeting on Thursday night. Tho total cost of tho work will be £IOOO, and the Highways Board has also allocated for maintenance work. A petition was received from shopkeepers and business linns in tho district objecting to any proposed legislation affecting the weekly half-holiday .whereby compulsory Saturday closing was introduced. It was stated that owing to the large volume of weekend and holiday trading, any attempt to enforce this measure would bo a gerious hardship to tho local business community. The board agreed to support the petitioners if required. Wednesday is the statutory half-holiday in the district A general- clearing of the grounds and ■buildings a 1 tho public domain was authorised, members agreeing that this part of the board's work had been too long'delayed and neglected.
