ORDEAL IN BUSH

MAN INJURES FOOT DIFFICULT JOURNEY FOLLOWS While chopping tea-tree at Mcleod's Bay, Waiheke, yesterday morning, Mr. H. Smith, aged 22, of Palm Beach, inflicted a deep gash in his foot. He was working in thick bush at tho time, and had to crawl nearly 100 yards on his hands and knees to where his companion, Mr. L. Arnold, was working. After Mr. Arnold had attended to him, Mr. Smith was taken on horsehack for eight miles—part of the journey being over rough tracks —to Palm Beach, which was reached after four hours. Mr. Smith was then transferred to a motor truck and driven a further three miles to Oneroa, where the Waiheke district nurse inserted 'three stitches in the wound. He was brought to Auckland by tho steamer Oncwa, and sent to hospital.
