OPENING FKOGMMME fTAUMARUNUI cup contest ELEVEN HORSES ENGAGED discussion of prospects Very useful fields am carded for the opening of the Taumarunui Club's meetinl'' at Paeroa to-day and the racing should he full of interest, as many of the candidates have engagements at tho Auckland spring carniv; 1, which follows at Kllerslie a week Liter. The chief event will be the Taumarunui Cup, for which there is a field of 11. The track is likely to be easy after the rain that } ia s fallen lately, although the going should he good unless the weather becomes wet. The win and place system of betting will he in operation. Following are detail> of the fields, with a review of the prospects in each race by "Archer": — 12.0 KEREPEEHI HflllK HANDICAP, Of £SO; 5 fur. st. lb. st. lb. Sir Tommy . 0 0 Blue Queen . 7 7 t/u-rMI . 7 13 General Ruse 7 7 Trv Luck. . 718 Miss Mestor . 7 7 Aramis . . • 7 10 Mi.ereana ..77 Eothoon . ./. 7 7 Choice ... 7 7 Betterment . 7 7 Maori Song . 7 7 Athea • ..77 Racela .• • • 7 7 Race Call ..77 Lily La ... 7 7 Okauia ... 77 Illimani ... 7 7 Brown Lap • 7 * The class is not strong and Sir Tommy may be very difficult to beat, as he is a smart beginner and has been working in improved fashion. His chief danger may come from Joyzell, Aramis, General Ruse, Illimani and Racela. Joyzell was seebnd to Little Ruse at Tauranga in June and Try Luck won a couple of races on tbe same course in 19,'!3, since when lie lias had very little racing. Aramis and Race]a have registered minor placings, while General Ruse and Illimani are likely improvers. Brown Lap also has several placed performances to his credit and Maori Song has shown speed in his work. Some who may be fancied are SIR TOMMY, JOYZELL, GENERAL RUSE. 12.40—HANDICAF HURDLES, Of £100; l'/a miles st. lb. st. lb. Dark Marble 10 12 Rusty Jack . 9 o Kanapa ... 910 .Little Musk . 9 0 London ... 9 a Jstormy Curlew ... 9 8 Weather ..90 Race Whip . 9 G Burvanna ..90 Bellbroney . . 9 l) Overlap ... 9 0 Dark Marble has been working well and may run prominently, even though he lacks recent raciag. Kanapa and London should hav-3 chances in the class, which is not good, but a better prospect may bo Curlew, who won at Ellerslie in June anc'l should be all the better for the race be had at Avondale last month. Race Whip's form has not reached expectations, but he has been working in good style and should not be without prospects. Bellbroney and Stormy Weather are likely newcomers to hurdling. Little Musk, Survanna and Overlap have no form. The best supported may bo CURLEW. RACE WHIP, KANAPA. I.2S—TRIAL HANDICAP, Of £75; 6 fur. st. lb. st. lb. Strathire ..87 Miriana ... 8 0 Gadger ...87 General Ruse 8 0 Libra .... 8 0 Master Hyllns 8 0 Gay Flier ..83 Lllanui,. . . 8 0 Aramis .... 8 8 Hot Dance ..80 Locknit ... 8 3 Shining Spear 8 0 Lady Valma . 8 3 Sinsrara ... 8 0 Susan .... 8 3 General liiske 8 0 Queen Ln . . 8 0 Melvanui ..80 Golden Jubilee 8 O Gascync... 8 0 llacela ... 8 0 Blue Queen . 8 O The field contains a number of improvers and the issue :s very open. Gay Flier ran second to High 'lest at New Plymouth,at his las 1 ; start and on tha.t form appears dangerous. Strathire ran third at the Pakuranga Hunt meeting at Ellerslie and Gadger was second to Respectful at Tauranga in June. Libra *-nd Aramis have registered minor Pacings and Locknit is an improving thrto-year-pld who finished third to Pennjcomequick . and Fine Stitcli at Gisborne in July, l.ady Valma was aj close fourth in the Maiden Race at ; Avondale, where Singara also displayed j T'lenty of speed. Of the others, tbe most likely may be Susan, 'who notched a third at New Plymouth early last month, and Gener.il Ruse. Popular fancies may bo GAY FLIER, LADY VALMA, LOCKNIT. 2.IO—HACK CUP HANDICAP, Of £130; 1 nrle and 110 yds. at. lb. st. lb. Queen Nona . 9 3 Pound Sterling 7 11 Respectful ..90 Whirlmlnt . . 711 fiergia ... 810 Full o' Scotch 7 7 Killadar ... 810 Miss Musketoon 7 7 Valpai . . 810 Survoy ... 7 7 Heaman ... 8 3 Illimani . . 77 The improving Respectful won at Tauranga in June with 9.4 and has been working pleasingly. Sergia ran fine races at Avondale, where she did not have the best of 1 ick, and hor prosspects appear brigh ;. Killadar has not appeared just lately, but was a winner at Tauranga in Jure and stays better than many in the 'ield. Valpai should be assisted by his filness, while Seaman arid Pound Sterling are both capable of performing very creditably.' Survoy has been galloping well and should be dangerous if he reproduces his track form. Full o' Scotc i reads jest of the others, although Whirl in in t and Illimani might surprise. Tho best supported may bo SERGIA, VALPAI, SURVOY 3.O—TAUMARUNUI CUP, Of £200; 1 in le and 3 lur. st. lb. st. lb. ; Master Brierly 9 7 Cay lto3o ..79 I llazir .... 8 0 Delrain ... 7 7 , Lagoon ... 8 6 lionny Gay .77 ■ Muntratoon . y 4 Tc Hal ... 7 7 Tradesman . 7 13 Con Fuoco .77 > Silver Brier 710 ] Bracket: Lagoon and Mungatoon. f Hie race he had at Avondale bene- ' fited Master Brierly, but he may re- j quire a little longer to reach concert pitch. Ma/.ii's sccord in the Avondale Gup was good, and as he looked susceptiblc to improvement, his prospects appear bright. Lagoon, a winner at j Avondale, and Mut gatoon comprise a h strong bracket and whichever is started should be dangerous. The turning j eourso may assist Tradesman, although ; •he would appeal mire if the distance were shorter. Silver B>*er did not have the best of luck at Avondale and has since gallopcn well. Gay Rose is always iikoly and Delrain. who won recently at \\angaiiui, i„ very lit.. Con Fuoco is nicely placed to make amends for his recent defeats and l e should be one of the hardest te beat. At the same weight ie ccrtainl.• apnea!:- more than Bonny ay and To Hai. The prime fancies t may be j: -MAZ.R ° CON FTOCO, • is GAY ROSE. t
3.4O—STEEPLECHASE HANDICAP, Of £120; about 2% miles st. lb. st. lb. Valpeen .12 4 Kinklo . . . u 0 Golden Moree ...no England . . 11 4 Friendly Boy I) 0 Emancipation 10 <> Bark Princess 0 0 Tho Hiker . !) 13 Kingspear . . 0 o Huskie ... 1) 10 Green Park . 1) 0 Semiurch -.02 Banter ... 0 0 Most of tho candidates arc without recent form. Valpeen represents canity the best class and would bo favoured if fit. However, there is a doubt about him, as ho was not himself during the winter and sufiored a lapse of form. Golden England usually races well on the course, and Emancipation's running over hurdles at Avondale recently suggests that lie will take a lot of beating. The Hiker should go well and Huskie is capable of a good performance when fit. Hark Princess has a little form to recommend her, but Scmiaroh is a doubtful starter. Other possibilities may be Moree, Friendly Boy and Kingspear. The main fancies may include EMANCIPATION, THE HIKER, GOLDEN ENGLAND. 4.2O—FLYING HANDICAP, Of £120; G fur. st. lb. st. lb. Prince Acre . }> 0 Wahine Ticihl 7 7 (Golden Sheila 8 3 Little Ruse . 7 7 Mungacro . . 711 Lady Ruler . 7 7 Tray Bit . . 710 Grand Score 7 7 Lea a Ice ... 7 Bracket: Golden Shciliv and M ungacre. Prince Aero was a good third at Avondale and a repetition of that form should make him very dangerous. Golden Sheila was a brilliant two-year-old and may take a lot of heating. She will be bracketed with Mungacre, whose latest running indicates that he also has bright prospects. 'Tray Bit has shown signs of regaining form and should go well. Legatee lias no recent performances, but he was a good two-year-old. Lady Ruler shaped creditably at Avondale and slight improvement would give her a chance. Wahine Rcihi and Grand Score are both speedy, but Little Ruse appears to be more favourably placed in the Spring Hack Handicap. The favourites may bo GOLDEN SHEILA-MUNGACRE Bracket, TRAY BIT, PRINCE ACRE. S.O—SPRING HACK HANDICAP, Of £100; G fur. st. lb. st. lb. Queen Nona » 3 Little Ruse . 8 3 Johnny Walls 8 y Lornacro ..82 Lady Diana . 8 8 Hikutaia . 7 13 Blue Needle. 8 8 Bonny Song . 7 10 Merial . . . 8 G Gay Egypt . 7 8 Sir Tommy R 3 Johnny Walls was unlucky at his last start, when narrowly beaten by Lady Diana. Both are again engaged and should run well, although the preference may be for Johnny Walls. Merial was a good two-year-old and should take considerable beating. Blue Needle and Sir Tommy are both winners and Little Ruse is very consistent. Lornacre has been galloping nicely and should make a forward showing. Hikutaia has not raced for some time, but Bonnie Song and Gay Egypt arc both speedy. The best supported may be JOHNNY WALLS, MERIAL, LITTLE RUSE.
