THE CITY MARKETS FAIR DEMAND FOR ORANGES AUSTRALIAN SHIPMENT AWAITED Island oranges were only in fair demand at the City Markets yesterday, most buyers preforrino; to wait for the arrival of the large .shipment of South Australian oranges which is expected to arrive by the Wanganella next week. Hothouse tomatoes again met with a keen inquiry with slightly heavier supplies available. Apples were slow of sale, while lemons and New Zealand grapefruit also met with a poor demand. Californian grapes have shown a firmer tendency lately, but a further shipment arrived by. the Mariposa yesterday. It is expected that the fruit ! will sell to a keen demand. New potatoes were marketed in increased quantities in the vegetable sec- ' tion with prices lower than last week. Cabbages and cauliflowers also were in heavier supply with prices firmer for the last-named vegetable. Carrots also brought high rates, while peas an<3» beans wore in good supply with values practically unchanged. There was a keen inquiry for kumnras and good quality pumpkins,. but swedes and celorv constituted a glut on the market. CANTERBURY MARKET WEAKNESS IN POTATOES [IIV TELEGRAPH —rRF.SS ASSOCIATION] CHRISTCHURCH, Friday Grain and produce markets have remained quiet throughout the week with little change in any section. Potatoes are very weak as there has been practically no interest at all by the North Island. Occasional orders have come from outports, but deliveries to Aucki land and Wellington have recently been heavy and markets there appear to be satisfied in the meantime. No definite decision has yet been reached to make another shipment to South America and until something: is known about this the market will probably remain dull. The small seeds trade remains steady although there is no great volume of business passing. Undergrade wheat has been in fair demand and the trade has been reasonably brisk at unchanged prices. Graded wheat is quiet, but maintains the lower price of the beginning of the week. Chaff is still weaker with practically no demand.
