CHARGE OF GAMING
OFF : ENCE ON WATERFRONT A denial that he was playing crown and anchor was made in the Police Court yesterday by Alfred Arnold Carey (Mr. Schramm), who was charged with playing a game of chance on tho Quay Street breastwork. He later admitted to the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, that "his fancy was two-up." Evidence was given by Sergeant Brown that ho visited Central Wharf on August 21 and 26, when he saw accused playing crown and anchor. In company with Detective Mahood witness saw accused on September 7, and ho admitted gambling daily until August 28, when the "school" was raided. Cross-examined by Doteotive-Ser-geant McHugh. accused admitted he had been found in a gaining "school" in Customs Street recently. "It would have boon much bettor if you had told me the truth," said the magistrate, imposing a fine of £2 and costs.
