DIVINING FOR OIL

Professor Emerieh Her/og, holds the belief that there is far more oil and gold beneath Britain's soil than is dreamed of—more oil than in Irak or Persia, fie means to go round England with his divining rod to survey the country's hidden riches. He is a dowser much honoured in his own country. "From a preliminary survey I made in England years ago," ho said, "1 expect to find oil under a large'area of Hampshire, Sussex and in the neighbourhood of Plymouth. And gold should be found in Wales and Cheshire and around Warrington and Great Budwort hj." The British Government, impressed by the reputation which has preceded him, has invited the professor to submit a report on his methods. Professor Herzog believes he may be of use to the British Army in Palestine, where the operations in the interior are hampered by lack of water. Whitehall is sufficiently interested to give him a hearing. His success during the war. when lie was official water finder for the Austrian Army, has influenced this official departure from the conventional to the novel exploration of possibilities. When Austrian troops on the Serbian front were so parched with thirst that their morale suffered, Professor Herzog offered his services. He was laughed at, but he went with his divining rod to the Korst Mountains and found springs that gave water in abundance.
