OBITUARY

MR. JOHN MURDOCH Tho dontli lias occurred of Mr. .Tolm Murdoch, of Nortlicote, aged 64. He was born near Dunedin, and at the age of 21 ivent to tho West Australian goldficlds, where lie spent ten years working at Kalgoorlio, Coolgardie and Boulder City. After returning to Dunedin lie was engaged in the waterworks department of the Dunedin City Council, and later as constructional engineer for the Otago llarlmur Board at Dunedin. Mr. Murdoch served with the New Zealand Engineers for three years during the Great War in Belgium and I l ' ranee, lie was badly gassed. On coming to Auckland he was engaged with the Lands Department on reclamation work on the Hauraki Plains. Since his retirement Mr. Murdoch had lived at Nortlicote, where ho served for two years as a member of the borough council, retiring last year. He was a member of the Masonic fraternity at Dunedin and was one of the managers of the Nortlicote Presbyterian Church. Ho is survived by Mrs. Murdoch. MRS. M. A. PAULL [FROM OUll OWN COIIRKSPONDKNT] HAMILTON, Friday The death occurred in Hamilton yesterday of Mrs. Mary Annie Paull, widow of the late Mr. It. .J. Paull, a former proprietor of the NVaikato Tillies, at the age of 82 years. Mrs. Paull came from Dorsetshire, England, over CO years ago, and settled in Christchurch with her husband. She and Mr. Paull later came to Hamilton. Mrs. Paull, who had been an invalid for some years, is survived by two sons and three daughters. MR. CHARLES CLEAVER f'nv TIC LUG It A I'll —OWN CO It It KSI'ON DICN'I'J NEW PLYMOUTH, Friday One oi the original settlers of Canterbury, Mr. Charles Cleaver, died at Nornianb.y, South Taranaki, to-day, aged 8G years. He was a son of Mr. H. Cleaver, who was sent by the Plymouth Company with 350 other persons in the sailing ship Cressy to found the settlement. Mr Charles Cleaver was three months old when the Cressy berthed at Lytt-elton alter a protracted voyage from England. Mr. Cleaver first lived in a raupo-thatched dug-out on the Port Hills. His father later took the family to Kaiapoi, where tJiey remained for 11 years. Alter his marriage to Miss F. Murfitt, Mr. Cleaver settled near Christehiireh and remained there for 23 years. The family arrived in Taranaki iiS years ago. There are 11 children, all living iu the North Island.
