EMPEROR OF ABYSSINIA

RUMOUR OF ABDICATION DENIAL BY LEGATION LONDON. Sept. 80 Speaking before the Assembly of the League of Nations at Geneva, the Abyssinian delegate, Mr. Taezaz, said that to save human lives and maintain an independent home for his people the Emperor must now regard himself as bound to consent to the sacrifice of the rights guaranteed to him under the Covenant. Suggestions that this implied the Emperor's readiness to abdicate were promptly denied by the Abyssinian Legation in London. In a later statement the Legation said that, while the Emperor would never give up his sovereignty, he was always willing to make sacrifices for the purpose of reaching an accord with Italy. A message from Home states that any idea of Haili Selassie bargaining with Italy for the retention of the unoccupied part of his former territory could be dismissed as ridiculous.
