THE MODERN COLLEGE

CHANGES AT NEWNHAM Notable women all over England are launching a new stage in college history, wrote a London correspondent recently. The Victorian buildings of Newnham College, Cambridge, where their mothers made history CO yertrs ago, are to be transformed into the most modern woman's college in the world during the next few years. They have raised nearly £30,000 already for its modernisation, and are appealing for another £70,000. Pictures of tho students' rooms of the 'seventies show them with open fires, candlesticks by the bookcase, heavy hangings, a cottage piano and aspidistra.

Miss Elisabeth Scott, architect of the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre at Stratford-on-Avon, is designing rooms that will show the revolution that has taken place in the collogo background. Each is to be equipped with up-to-dato fittings, and an attractive cupboard conceals the hot and cold water laid on to the room of tho modern undergraduate. Several rooms have already been reconstructed in existing halls of residence to relieve the ever-growing demand for more accommodation. The building scheme will provide an assembly hall, where all the students can meet without overcrowding, a new court with students' and fellows' rooms, the .enlargement of one of tho dining halls, extension of tho kitchens and modernisation of tjie hospital.
