FIFTY YEARS AGO

STEAM TRAM E-XPERIMENT Sydney was making its first experiment with steam trams half a century ago. An item from the Sydney correspondent of the New Zealand Herald appearing in the issue of October 2, 1886, stated: — "Great objection is. taken by mas? to the unsightly steam tram carriages plying along Klizabeth Street to Glebe and other places. During the past 12 months several persons have been JciJJed and the pedestrian, when crossing the street has to keep his weather eye open, while there is imminent danger of the town being set on fire by sparks. These carriages only stop at the corners of certain streets and until the Puffing Billy moves on all traffic is at a standstill. There can be no doubt but that having horses in lieu of steam is not only much safer but far more convenient for the travelling public."
