THE MARKET BASKET

ORANGES STILL DEAR

HIGH PRICES! FOR CARROTS Oranges again Hold at high prices on the retail market during the past week, the Australian variety being particularly scarce. Very few fruiterers will have sufficient supplies of Australian oranges to last them over the weekend, but there should be plenty available next week when the Wanganella arrives with a large shipment. Supplies of Californian grapes also are lower and prices for both black and white varieties have advanced. Carrots have been bringing high prices, and yesterday a quantity from Ohakune sold at up to 9s a sugar bag at the City Markets. As this price represents over £l7 a ton, the investment must have proved a vorv profitable one for growers. Rhubarb has been available in heavier supplies over the past week and is selling at lower rates. Table celery is now practically finished and other lines are now bringing 3d to 6d a stick. Savoy cabbages are no longer available, but spring cabbages are selling at from 4d to Gd each. There has been no change in the prices for fish, bacon, ham, cheese, butter or eggs. BUILDING SOCIETY YEAR AT WHANG AREI [from our own corrkspondknt] WIIANGAREI, Thursday "The society is in a particularly sound financial position, and one of the fine features this year is that the withdrawals are considerably less than during the past few years, which can ho taken as a sign of generally improved conditions," said Mr. H.
