TRANSFER OF CONTROL AUCKLAND'S OPPOSITION WORK OF COUNCIL CRITICISED The transfer of the headquarters of the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association from Christehurch was opposed by delegates at the annual meeting of the Auckland Centre last night. The question as to whether a change of location was desirable, however, caused criticism of the council's administration. Tho discussion took place in consequonce of the Otago Centre's suggestion that, as the New Zealand Council had not done enough to encourage swimming, tho headquarters of the association should be removed from Christehurch. Assertions made by the Otago Contro in support of its action wore denied by the council in a statement detailing its activities. Tho council claimed that it had persistently endeavoured to arrange tours of New Zealand by overseas champions, and to obtain financial assistance from tho Government toward tho teaching of swimming. Furthermore, it had, when refused a grant by the last Government, transferred several hundred pounds to tho educational account, with tho object of facilitating tho instruction work.

Mr. J. Enwright moved that the centre should express its full confidence in the council. This was opposed by Messrs. It. Moore and L. J. Kenny, who recalled the Auckland Centro's protests in tho past against the council's laxity in replying to correspondence.

Mr. L. Munro said there was apparently a need for improvement on tho council's part, and ho advised the centre not to commit itself either way. Its reply should be couched in such terms that the council would realise more was expected of it. The meeting unanimously disapproved of a change in the headquarters. It was agreed that the council should be Informed of tho centre's opinion that its affairs had been lax during the past two years, and that tho centre hoped for an improvement in future administration. Tho Nelson Centre advised that the New Zealand intermediate and junior championships would be contested in Nelson on January 10, 18 and 10. Advice was also received from tho Taranaki Centre that the New Zealand senior championships would be decided in New Plymouth on February 6, 8 and 10. A welcome to the delegates of the various clubs was extended by the chairman, Mr. T. C. Hobbs-Jones. He 6aid that ho was pleased to see present so many old delegates, and he particularly welcomed new delegates and visitors, among whom were representatives of the Royal Life-Saving Society. A voto of sympathy was passed to Miss Pauline Iloeft, former New Zealand lady champion, in the death of her mother. The meeting adopted a motion by Mr. J. R. Miller that two more members be appointed to the management committee, so that it should include four delegates from clubs not otherwise represented. Mr. R. Moore moved that, if a delegate forfeited his seat through non-attendance at meetings, he should not be eligible for reappointment during the current season. The motion was carried.

A remit that it should be compulsory for clubs to include at least one breaststroke and one backstroke event on their carnival programmes was lost. Members expressed the opinion that the existing rule, providing for at least one breaststroke or one backstroke event on each programme, should not be altered.

A proposal that the wholo of the recognised Auckland championship events should be controlled by the centre was referred to the next meeting for consideration. Speaking on** behalf of the Royal Lifesaving Society, Mr. W. F. Smith suggested the formation of a body representative of tho society, the centre, the Surf Life-saving Association and the Primary Schools' Association to further the interests of swimming and life-saving Consideration of the suggestion was deferred.

The financial statement, which showed a credit balance of £95 18s lOd, was adopted. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patron, tho Governor-General, Viscount Gaiway; vice-patron, Mr J. S.
