RAGWORT ERADICATION

Sir,—! wish to endorse " Waikato Farmer's" statement wherein ho states that ragwort eradication is now a national problem and quite beyond manpower to deal with it. The writer remembers 20 years ago when the Government spent a certain amount of money each year for tho cutting of ragwort in the Rotorua district, and it is just as bad now as it was when they first started. But instead of the farming community petitioning the Government for sodium chlorate, as mentioned bv " Waikato Farmer," I consider the better plan would be to ask the Government to buy up aged ewes and graze the vacant Crown and nativo sections. A lot of sheep could be bought with the £500,000 as suggested by " Waikato Farmer." I would also suggest that the Government make finance available to farmers for the purchase of sheep at a low rate of interest on a ten-years' mortgage. That would be lor the farmers who arc not in a position to finance the purchase ol sheep. If the Government had flocks of sheep in. charge of shepherds it would be possible to graze farmers' holdings, and by the rotational method of grazing with sheep, within a few years ragwort would bo a thing of tho past. A.C.P.
