TRUCK-DRIVER'S PERIL

SPARK PLUG IN PETROL ANONYMOUS LETTER RECEIVED [by telegraph—OWN correspondent] NEW PLYMOUTH. Wednesday An investigation by detectives has so far failed to reveal the identity of the person who interfered with the mechanism of a motor-truck in a manner that was thought likely to endanger s the life of Mr. Alfred Dick, a driver employed by Boon Brothers, of Stratford. Further developments have occurred, however, and the inquiry is progressing vigorously. When Mr. Dick went to start the truck last week he found a spark plug connected with the ignition system dangling in the vapour in the petrol tank. It was presumed that the instant that the engine was turned the petrol tank under the seat in the cab of the truck would explode. The wiring was concealed, but Mr. Dick's suspicions were aroused by a slight derangement of the seat and the fact that various articles he had left on the seat were on the floor of the cab.

An investigation revealed the cunning contrivance. Mr. Dick reported the matter to the police. The next day ho received a letter, a piece of brown paper, on which was printed, " If at first you don't succeed, try, try, try again." There was no signature. Mr. Dick stated that twice before the ignition of the firm's trucks which he had driven had been interfered with. He did not know of anyone who might desire to do him harm.
